NATO nations, including the United Kingdom, have accused Donald Trump of jeopardizing relations by threatening tariffs related to Greenland. The US President recently declared intentions to impose 10% tariffs on countries, including the UK, that oppose his desire to acquire Greenland. He further warned that tariffs on NATO allies could increase to 25% if a deal for the territory’s purchase is not reached by June 1.
Cabinet ministers, led by Keir Starmer, have condemned Trump’s actions as “completely inappropriate.” In a joint statement, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing their commitment to Arctic security. They criticized the tariff threats as damaging to transatlantic relations and vowed to respond unitedly while upholding their sovereignty.
The UK’s Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, affirmed the UK’s unwavering stance on Greenland despite Trump’s threats. She emphasized that the future of Greenland should be determined by the will of its people and those of Denmark. Nandy stressed the importance of the UK-US relationship and reiterated that the UK’s position on Greenland is non-negotiable.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also rejected Trump’s tactics, with Macron refusing to yield to “intimidation” and Kristersson asserting that they would not be “blackmailed.” In response to the escalating situation, EU ambassadors have been called for urgent discussions.
