Brazilian Woman Strangled to Death by Ex in Ireland

A young woman from Brazil who had relocated to Ireland in pursuit of a better future was reportedly strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend during a visit to his apartment, as revealed in court proceedings.

The victim, Bruna Fonseca, was discovered lifeless at a residence in the city center of Cork on January 1, 2023. Her former partner, Miller Pacheco, aged 31, has denied the charge of her murder. According to prosecution counsel Bernard Condon, Bruna, a 28-year-old university graduate, had emigrated to Ireland in 2022 with hopes of a brighter life.

Court testimonies indicated that Bruna and Pacheco, who both hailed from the same small town in Brazil, had previously been in a relationship but had since separated, with Bruna seemingly moving forward with her life.

Having arrived in Ireland in September 2022 with her niece Maria, Bruna secured a job as a cleaner at Mercy University Hospital in Cork. Pacheco followed suit and relocated to Ireland in November 2022, working at a restaurant on McCurtain Street, as reported by Cork Beo.

Despite Bruna being involved in a new relationship, interactions persisted between the former couple. Pacheco allegedly bombarded Bruna with numerous text messages, with Bruna eventually expressing her desire for him to cease contact by December 20, 2022.

Incidents at a Christmas Eve gathering and a subsequent New Year’s event saw Pacheco’s continued focus on Bruna, culminating in a distressing situation at his apartment where Bruna tragically lost her life. Witnesses reported hearing loud screams in the vicinity in the early hours of January 1, 2023.

Further details revealed Pacheco’s admission to a friend over the phone, indicating an irreversible action had taken place. When confronted by acquaintances of the victim at his residence, Pacheco denied responsibility, despite the discovery of Bruna’s deceased body in the flat.

Pacheco claimed self-defense, alleging an anxiety-induced reaction and an accidental fatal encounter with Bruna during a physical altercation. However, a subsequent post-mortem examination conducted by Assistant State Pathologist Dr. Margaret Bolster determined Bruna’s cause of death to be asphyxiation.

The accused, formerly an engineer in Brazil, is receiving courtroom assistance from a Portuguese interpreter. Family members of Bruna have journeyed to Ireland for the ongoing trial.
