Met Office Issues Yellow Weather Alerts for Heavy Rainfall

The Met Office has issued three fresh yellow weather alerts for heavy rainfall, with 15 regions preparing for potential flooding and power interruptions. The warnings encompass areas in northwest England and southwest Scotland from Saturday afternoon until Sunday evening, as well as parts of north Wales from midnight on Sunday throughout the day.

The national weather service cautions that homes and businesses might experience flooding, while disruptions to bus and train services are also likely. Spray and flooding on roads could result in extended travel times.

Anticipated heavy rainfall over the weekend could lead to travel disruptions and possible flooding in England and Scotland, according to the Met Office. Similarly, in Wales, heavy rainfall on Sunday may have comparable repercussions.

In northern England, the Met Office predicts that rain will move in from the west on Saturday, eventually clearing by Sunday afternoon and evening. The rainfall will be intense at times, with accumulations of 30-50mm expected widely and exceeding 100mm in some elevated areas.

Wales is likely to witness accumulations of 30 to 40mm across most areas, with the potential for 80 to 100mm in some elevated regions. Scotland, on the other hand, could experience 30 to 40mm widely and 60 to 80mm in highland areas.

Rebekah Hicks, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, highlighted the uncertainty in the timing of heavy rain spells and the risk of travel disruptions and localized flooding due to prolonged rainfall and saturated ground. The weather outlook for the upcoming week remains unsettled, with continuous monitoring of developments.

Today’s Met Office forecast mentions a mostly dry start with sunshine, followed by increasing cloud cover and rain in Northern Ireland, central, and western Scotland. Later in the day, Wales and western England may experience light drizzle. The day is expected to be mild but quite windy.

Tonight, the forecast indicates early clear spells in the northeast, while other regions may observe cloudy skies with sporadic rain. Heavier rain in the west is predicted to move eastward overnight, with clearer conditions in the northwest, accompanied by fog and frost as winds ease.
