“£124,000 Insurance Murder Plot: Woman and Accomplice Sentenced to Prison”

A woman and her accomplice have been sentenced to prison for a murder plot aimed at claiming a £124,000 life insurance payout. Michelle Mills, 46, received a 19-year jail term at Swansea Crown Court for conspiring with Geraint Berry, a 46-year-old ex-marine, to kill her spouse Christopher. Berry also received a 19-year sentence for orchestrating the scheme, characterized by the prosecution as cunning, heartless, and deadly. The judge commended Mr. Mills for his exceptional bravery in thwarting the duo’s plans.

The incident unfolded when two masked individuals armed with fake firearms attacked Mr. Mills in a caravan at a holiday park in Cenarth, Carmarthenshire, in September 2024. Despite the initial assumption of an armed robbery, subsequent investigation revealed a sinister agenda. Gas masks, cable-tie handcuffs, and a forged suicide note, supposedly from Mr. Mills, were discovered in Berry’s possession, along with incriminating messages exchanged before and after the attack.

Following the sentencing, Georgia Jones of the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the premeditated and ruthless nature of the plot concocted by Mills and Berry. Evidence presented during the trial illustrated their detailed planning to eliminate Mr. Mills. Fortunately, Mr. Mills’ resilience thwarted their sinister intentions, leading to the conviction of the perpetrators.

During her illicit relationship with Berry, Mills discussed various methods of murder, including suffocation with a pillow, poisoning with foxgloves, and adding antifreeze to food. The scheme reportedly took shape shortly after Mr. Mills obtained a sizable life insurance policy. Text messages revealed their romantic entanglement and aspirations to be together, culminating in the attack.

In his victim impact statement, Mr. Mills expressed shock and devastation at the calculated nature of the incident, which shattered his sense of security and happiness. He continues to grapple with the emotional aftermath, facing stress and anxiety. The attack left physical scars and hearing impairment, serving as a constant reminder of the traumatic event.

Detective Inspector Sam Gregory of Ceredigion CID recounted the unfolding of events post-attack, revealing the discovery of incriminating items in Berry’s possession, prompting a deeper investigation into the extent of the planned crime. Despite their denial, Mills and Berry were found guilty of conspiracy to murder, with Mills also convicted of perverting the course of justice.

The court learned of Mills’ troubled past and mental health challenges, shedding light on her vulnerability and infatuation with Berry. Berry, on the other hand, attributed his actions to substance abuse and psychological conditions. Sentencing saw Mills and Berry handed 19-year prison terms, with Thomas receiving a 12-month sentence for firearm possession. Mills will serve two-thirds of her term in custody before transitioning to community-based supervision, while Berry faces a similar timeline. Thomas, deemed to have played a lesser role, is due for imminent release following his remand period.
